What is a coding assistant?
Simply put, a coding assistant is an AI that helps you write code. For this, it's best to use models that are well trained on code, such as Anthropic's Claude models, or ready-made IDEs with built-in AI such as Cursor or Windsurf.
How well a model handles understanding and generating code can be judged by benchmarks. The SWE benchmark evaluates how the model deals with user issues submitted on GitHub and what percentage of them the model was able to solve.
On the LLM Arena website we can find a category showing how a model is rated for coding, by comparing the results of its answers and having people rate them. This is a very important aspect, because in the end the result has to appeal to us and match what we asked for.
